We recently checked into the Westin, Kaanapali Beach in Maui. On this trip we were traveling lean; no extra bags, no bed pillows. We did however splurge and bring our Hawaiian motif pillow cases so Terry’s thirteen pound cranium would feel more at home.
The room had everything one would ever need, including an enormous free-standing bathtub in the center of a ginormous bathroom. They thought of everything to make our stay perfect! However, I did have one small issue with the hard king sized bed pillows. I could barely get my arms around them.
The first night I wasn’t able to get my neck comfortable and woke up feeling as if I needed to wear a neck brace for the rest of the trip. I called down to housekeeping and learned that they had extra soft one and would be happy to send one up for me. Problem solved and for the next several nights I slept like a baby.
On the 5th night however I awoke unable to move my neck and realized that Terry and I got our pillows switched. He was purring away and I didn’t have the heart to wake him, so I tossed and turned for what seemed like hours. At one point I got up and took a small sofa pillow off the couch and wrapped my Hawaiian motif pillowcase on it and tried to sleep on that, which didn’t feel any better. I lay there looking at the ceiling and decided that if Terry would just wake up, I’d make the switch, since I knew that he was perfectly happy with his massive pillow.
Within moments he stirred and then got up. I knew it was time to make my move. My heart was beating so hard that I thought he would hear it, but I knew I had to move fast. I bound from the bed, ran around to his side and took the pillow case off the stolen pillow as fast as I could. It ripped! So I ran back around to the evil pillow and removed the case to give to him. On my run back to his side, in the dark, I put my pillow case on his pillow, listening for the flush to determined how much more time I had. On my second attempt the pillow case went on, albeit a little cock-eyed. I dashed back to my side with my contraband under my arm and attempted to quickly put the torn pillow case on mine to camouflage any evidence of the exchange. As I heard his footsteps, I jumped into bed with my face down into my pillow to conceal the heavy breathing.
Terry returned to bed unaware of the switch. I slyly watched him out of the corner of my eye to make sure he didn’t recognize the new pillow. He put his arm under the pillow, laid his head down and was sleeping within seconds.
I thought It was a success until morning when I saw him rubbing his neck and complaining of a little soreness. After I reluctantly confessed, he whispered, I would have given it to you if you had just asked. I felt a little guilty, but would do it again if the occasion arose.
